Some dog owners spend a long time in the naming process, while some know at first sight what to call their new dog or puppy. What is important is that the name we choose reflects our dog’s personality and sense of humor, but also our own. That is why people are now opting for more quirky names than the traditional Fido and Rover. Your dog’s name is now an extension of your individuality.

In a list compiled by Rover, Max, tops the list of names for male dogs. With a few exceptions, such as Max, Buddy and Bear, most of the names on the Top 10 list “aren’t considered traditional dog names”. This represents an increasingly popular trend among pet owners, viewing themselves more as “pet parents” than a dog owner. About 14% of the names in their list were exclusive to one dog such as one named Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. Thanks to popular culture and an increasing number of young dog owners, other names becoming popular included Heisenberg and Beyonce.

In a survey released this summer by the Veterinary Pet Insurance Co, a dog named Sir Knuckles da Dragon and a cat named Cheeto Burrito took top honors in its list of the Wackiest Pet Names of the Year. While Luna and Diesel are now the hottest puppy names in the UK.

Whether you go for classic and traditional, or new and quirky make sure it’s right for you and your dog….and remember, there are no rules!
